Thread: WinXP page file moved to SD card

WinXP page file moved to SD card

I just moved my Window's XP page file / swap file to a 4 gig Sandisk SDHC card in the SD slot. So far it seems that I have picked up a nice performance boost.

I used this guide: Hacking Windows XP: Speeding Disk Access

MSOutlook 2007, normally pretty pokey, is zipping along much faster.

Sounds like a DIY version of vistas readyboost. ;-)
Nice to have it working on winXP though.

Re: WinXP page file moved to SD card

Thanks for the link. This has assited me in my XP on a cf card. The card I bought was a tad under speed @ a 133x 32g, this has boosted fie opening times nicely. Especially with open office which tend to be a hog of resources at the best of times.

Now if only I can get my wifi to stop jamming up on my crunchbang CF card Id be set. One CF for work and one for Play.
    Thanks again for the info

Just a heads up to anyone wanting to try this in XP SP3:

Unless you went through _A LOT_ of hoops, you probably didn't actually move you pagefile.sys over to your SD card.

The big reason for this is that Win XP _does not_ let you have pagefiles on removable media. Removable media does not mount before pagefiles are created. The OS is pretty hush hush about this too. If you set pagefile space on a removable media, the Virtual Memory configuration utility will happily tell you it has created the space, and even update the registry, but not create any files, even after a reboot! If you want to be sure, go looking on your SD card for pagefile.sys.

If the SD card reader is hooked up via internal USB bus, there is a fix for this. Google "Hitachi Filter Driver" for info. The basic idea is Hitachi produced Microdrives that were removable but functioned exactly as real drives would. They released a driver to 'fool' Windows into thinking the Microdrive was not removable. This can be extended for other USB storage devices.

My Everun Note is being repaired right now so I can't say whether this would work on a Note, but you can check to see how the SD card reader is set up through Device Manager.

Yep, tehsean you are right -- I abandoned this approach and I am now happily using eboostr. I wrote about it in this thread: http://www.umpcportal.com/modules/ne...=5599&forum=18
